To all Secondary 1 students in 2024, get ready for an exciting new journey!
Singapore's Ministry of Education (MOE) has announced plans to replace the O- and N-Level exams with a new national exam in 2027. This change will allow students to choose subjects at different levels (G1, G2, and G3) based on their abilities, starting from Secondary 1. It comes hand in hand with the elimination of streaming in secondary schools.
The MOE will introduce a common national exam that is co-certified by Cambridge Assessment and Singapore. This exam will provide Secondary 4 students with a recognized certificate, reflecting their subject levels. Admissions into junior colleges, polytechnics, and technical institutes will now consider students' subject levels (G1, G2, and G3).
In the search for alternatives to the fifth year in secondary school, the MOE is exploring the possibility of offering a program similar to the Polytechnic Foundation Programme.
These reforms aim to create a fair and flexible education system where students can choose subjects based on their interests and strengths.
Here is an example of what subject-based banding ( SBB) will look like for a student with different interests and strengths.
